Calling all coffee lovers, fans of photography and amazing people that would like to help us raise some money for the incredible cancer charity, Macmillan Cancer
Lenses of Croydon are this year supporting Macmillan by holding a virtual Macmillan Coffee Morning on Sunday 25th October at 11:30 am. Leading up to this event, we are making available some unique one-off coffee mugs that can be obtained from our website. Each mug features an image that has been donated by a photographer from within our group. All proceeds will be donated to Macmillan in the name Lenses of Croydon, so please consider visiting our website to pick up a mug after you’ve booked a ticket for the Virtual Coffee Morning.
What does a Macmillan Virtual Coffee Morning with Lenses of Croydon look like?
• It’s an online event where each participant sorts out their own tea/coffee, cakes or biscuits.
• There will be an optional 15-minute quiz with some exciting prizes.
• Anyone that takes along the best- cupcake will also win a prize
• Celine Marchbank will be our special guest speaker who will be sharing about her photographic practice.
• Raffle (tickets cost £3 each or 2 for £5)- prises include, 1) a signed copy of the book Tulip: My Mother’s Favourite Flower by guest speaker, Celine Marchbank, 2) a copy of the photobook Pind: A portrait of a Village in Rural Punjab, Hark1Karan, 3) a printed photograph taken by Mark Chilvers and 4) a mug with an image taken by Sroyon Mukherjee.

Celine Marchbank is a British photographic artist based in London. Her practice explores everyday life, fascinated by the quiet details of domesticity, with a particular interest in home, family and community.
Celine’s first book; Tulip, the story of the last year of her mother’s life, was published by Dewi Lewis Publishing in 2016, where it was met with widespread acclaim and exhibited and published nationally and internationally. Named Photo Book of the Month by Sean O’Hagan in The Observer newspaper and Photo Book of The Week by Photo-Eye, featured in The British Journal of Photography, BBC News, The Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement, The Independent, The Telegraph Magazine, Vanity Fair and Photomonitor amongst others.
The book is filled with beautiful photos of Marchbank’s mother, Sue Miles, who was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Marchbank immediately began photographing her mother and “the things that reminded me of her, or things I wanted to remember of her”. In April the following year, her mother’s illness was confirmed as terminal, and the memory project took on an even more delicate aspect. “That is when it became really difficult,” writes Marchbank in her foreword; “after all, I was her daughter, not her photographer.”
Celine will use her open and sensitive style to share her intimate and thought-provoking photos which are filled with love, sensitivity and reflective moments, humour and compassion that help to enlighten the viewer towards an awareness of how cancer can have an impact on someone living with it and those closest to them.
